Type and Size of Vehicles To Be Transported On Car Carriers
– Loads on car carrier trailers are planned according to the size of vehicles.
– Length, width and height of vehicles determine how many cars can be loaded on a car carrier trailer. Smaller cars can be transported on a ‘double decker’ trailer, while large vehicles have to be transported on single-deckers. Some trailers are multi-purpose, and can load a mix of smaller and bigger cars.
– A large vehicle could ‘take up two spaces’, as one space could be lost because of length and height. This will affect the quote. A misconception is that the quote to transport a small car should be a lot less, but the reality is that it still takes up one space. Not even two very small cars can be loaded in one space.
– Extra fitments on a vehicle will determine whether the vehicle can be loaded, eg a rooftop tent, roof rack, bull bars, roll bars, cattle rails, extended taxi roofs etc. These fitments change the dimensions of a vehicle, and may mean that the vehicles cannot be transported.
– Some vehicles have wider wheels than normal, and might not fit onto the trailer tracks. They might even be too wide for the trailer.
– Weight is also taken into account, as weigh bridges enforce the law wrt load distribution of the trailers. GIT (goods in transit insurance).
